Vitinha, a young Portuguese midfielder from FC Porto, is set to join PSG for 40 million euros. The capital club will pay the player’s release clause, considered a future great in his position.
He will be, a priori, the first recruit of the Luis Campos era. Vitinha, whose real name is Vítor Ferreira, will soon leave FC Porto for Paris Saint-Germain, according to information from RMC Sport. The champion club of France will pay 40 million euros, the amount of the release clause of this Portuguese neo-international, considered a crack at his post and who ended the season with a coronation in the Portuguese Liga.
· What is his style of play?
Vasco Seabra, who had to deal with him as coach of CS Maritimo, is formal: “He’s an alien”. Same story for Rui Barros, former assistant coach of FC Porto: “He’s a phenomenon”. For his compatriot Ruben Neves, he is “one of the best players in the Portuguese championship”. Generally speaking, many compare it to the illustrious Deco.
Axial midfielder, Vitinha is considered a torchbearer capable of excelling in construction, thanks to his passing quality, but also defensively, through his positioning. He likes to touch a lot of balls, which puts him at an average of 62 passes per game in the league. His successful pass rate exceeds 90% in La Liga Portugal and the Champions League. WhoScored, which compiles Opta stats, puts him in the best XI in the Championship this season. In this 47-game season in all competitions (four goals, five assists), Vitinha has been used by Sergio Conceição as a central midfielder in a 4-4-2, or as an ‘8’ in a 4-3-3.
“He is a player who is very comfortable with the ball, who has real verticality, who plays forward, who plays under pressure”, rejoices Walid Acherchour, RMC Sport consultant in After Foot. “It’s a treat. We will have to see how it can fit into the game, but PSG attracts a real nugget. In terms of the style of play, it will very quickly become one of the darlings”, he predicts.
· What is his background?
Vitinha is a pure product of the FC Porto training center, which he joined at the age of 11. He does all his classes there, even if he spends a year with Padroense. His professional debut dates back to January 2020, with an entry into play in the Portuguese Cup. Wolverhampton, who like to welcome Portuguese talents, obtains him on loan during the 2020-2021 season. It is only rarely used by Nuno Espírito Santo: just over 500 minutes in 19 Premier League games. This does not encourage the English club to exercise the purchase option, set at 20 million euros. “I expected to play more,” commented the person later.
Wolves are probably biting their fingers. This season, Vitinha has been voted player of the month three times (December, January, March). “I’m living a dream, without a doubt, and I just want to end the season in the best way”, said the player after his last award. His talent was noticed long before that, with the game teams. He was thus elected revelation of the 2019 Toulon Tournament with the Portugal national under-19 team. In 2021, he is an unfortunate finalist for the Euro Espoirs, but finds himself named in the team of the tournament.
Taking advantage of an injury to Ruben Neves, Vitinha discovered the Portugal A team in March, during the European play-offs for the 2022 World Cup. Fernando Santos granted him his first start on June 12, against Switzerland in Nations League (1-0 defeat). Here he is now at three international appearances.
What were the latest transfer window rumours?
Before the very concrete interest of Paris Saint-Germain was mentioned, the English and Portuguese press made it known that Manchester United and Arsenal were following the player closely. FC Barcelona was also mentioned, but nothing more.
In remarks reported on June 15 by the Lusa news agency, President Pinto Da Costa explained that a club had made a first approach without bringing the 40 million euros of the release clause: “There was a specific offer, of considerable value, for Vitinha, which we did not accept. We mentioned the break clause. Of course, the fans can rest assured. One euro under the break clause and Vitinha will not leave not”.
They said about him
Sergio Conceição, FC Porto coach (Sport TV via Expresso in March 2022): “He has developed fantastically, especially when he doesn’t have the ball. With, we already knew he’s a fabulous player, with fantastic technique and quality of possession of the ball. He has improved a lot in his long passes, a point on which I insisted a lot, and in the time he takes to let go of the ball. He seems to me to be a complete midfielder. He is one of the players who collects the most balls, he is one of the most defensive players. If we combine this with his technical quality, we have a player who fills the pitch “.
Deco, former Portuguese international (A Bola in February 2022): “I see him as an authentic crack, a player with enormous potential, who is already a reference in his team. (…) He is a remarkable footballer, who shows enormous maturity despite his young age and which has a particularity that makes him different from all the others. He reads the game like no one, before everyone else, and anticipates situations. When he manages to combine all these skills, he makes FC Porto’s game unstoppable, always setting the pace, whether it’s slower or more intense. We are up against a great player”.
