Sunday US Open scenarios: What could happen in the final round at Brookline Country Club? | Golf News – NewsRaiser

Jon Rahm looking to win back-to-back US Open titles

Who will win the US Open? What records could be broken on the last day at Brookline? We take a look at six potential scenarios for what should be a special Major Sunday…

A decisive victory for Zalatoris?

Will Zalatoris is still on the hunt for a long-awaited first PGA Tour title, although a brilliant third-round 67 bolstered his chances of earning that first major tournament victory.

Zalatoris finished second at the Masters last year and has already lost two play-offs in 2022, missing Luke List at the Farmers Insurance Open and beating Justin Thomas in extra holes at last month’s PGA Championship.

Arnold Palmer was the last player to follow a major play-off loss with a victory in the next major some 60 years ago, but can Zalatoris change that at the Country Club?

Another Brookline win for Fitzpatrick?

Only three Englishmen in the past 100 years have won the US Open; Cyril Walker, Tony Jacklin and Justin Rose, with Matt Fitzpatrick in a prime position to join this elite group at the site where he won the US Amateur in 2013.

Matt Fitzpatrick briefly took the solo lead at the 2022 US Open at Brookline after three birdies in four holes in the third round at the Country Club, before unleashing a shot on the 18th hole.

Danny Willett was the last player to turn his first PGA Tour title into a major, winning the Masters in 2016, with Graeme McDowell, Louis Oosthuizen, Martin Kaymer and Charl Schwartzel among other players to do so.

Fitzpatrick heads into the final day on four under alongside Zalatoris, having finished a two under 68 with a bogey on the final hole, with the 27-year-old set to build on a strong first half of the year and a challenge for an elusive victory on American soil.

A big winner for the first time?

Even if Zalatoris or Fitzpatrick isn’t the man to lift the trophy on Sunday night, there are plenty of other players on the business side of the standings who could still clinch a first major title.

Thirteen of the last 17 US Open have been won by major champions for the first time, with Sam Burns and Adam Hadwin among the players vying to make 14 of 18.

Hadwin – the first-lap leader – rushed to a level 70 to stay within two of the lead, while Burns is three off the pace after a third-lap 71. The halfway co-leader Joel Dahmen remains an outside contender, with Ireland’s Seamus Power five strokes adrift heading into the final day.

A successful title defense for Rahm?

Rahm remains in contention to become the fourth player since World War II to win back-to-back US Open titles, despite a nightmarish ending in his third round.

After finding his tee shot leaning against a tree, Jon Rahm was forced to play his next shot facing the holeshot in round three of the 2022 US Open at Brookline.

Only Ben Hogan, Curtis Strange and most recently Brooks Koepka have won the event in successive seasons, with Rahm looking to join this club after last year’s impressive win at Torrey Pines.

Rahm held a one-shot lead with a hole to go, only to twice attempt to get out of a fairway bunker en route to a double bogey six at par-four last. The Spaniard heads into the final day in third place and a little behind.

A historic success for McIlroy?

No player in modern PGA Tour history has won the week before winning the US Open, but McIlroy still has the chance to change that record despite a disappointing Saturday at Brookline.

Rory McIlroy dropped a shot on the second hole in the third round of the 2022 US Open at Brookline when his ball came to rest just short of hitting the hole for par.

McIlroy followed rounds of 67 and 69 with a three of 73 to lose three strokes of the pace, meaning the former world No. 1 will need to impress on the final day to challenge for a first major win since 2014.

The Northern Irishman bogeyed three of his first six holes but made three par saves of 10ft or more on his back nine, staying in the top seven and in contention to win the US Open for the second time.

A Sunday load for Scheffler?

Seven players have won the Masters and the US Open in the same year, with Scottie Scheffler still with an outside chance to join that club and pick up a fifth PGA Tour win of the season.

Scottie Scheffler eagled on the par-5 eighth hole to take a two-shot lead in the third round of the 2022 US Open at Brookline.

Scheffler has already won the WM Phoenix Open, Arnold Palmer Invitational, WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play this year, as well as this win at Augusta National, with the world No. 1 just three off the pace heading into the final day.

Tiger Woods remains the only player to win the US Open as world number 1, a feat he has achieved three times in his career, with Scheffler looking to equal Woods’ record and become a two-time major champion.
