Portugal are preparing for the 3rd day of the Neighborhood World Cup in Clermont-Ferrand

“What better way to get together than to organize a friendly match against the Portuguese Library”. Victor Ferreira, captain of Portugal for the Neighborhood World Cup, sums up well the importance, for the Portuguese community of Clermont, of being together. The country is participating for the first time in the event, ex CAN (African Cup of Nations) neighborhoods.Charly, Clément and Mathias Pereira Lage have their maternal grandfather who worked in tires. Mathias (right), 25, is the pride of the family and the community. After playing for three seasons at Clermont foot, at the time in Ligue 2, he has just signed a contract with Brest (Ligue 1).

“I organized two games open to all to select the team. The majority of the best players responded. Most evolve in teams at the Regional or National 2 level. All are proud of their roots. “We were born in France, but our parents or grandparents come from Portugal. Some came to work at Michelin in the 1980s”.

The Portuguese Library participates in the stewardship of the team during the competition. Created in 1974, the association brings together the Portuguese community and shares moments of conviviality.

We gather beyond the ages, we simply feel good there.

Edouardo De Almeida (President of the football section at the Portuguese Library)

At the time, “it was indeed a library being set up so that the Portuguese of Clermont-Ferrand could find works and books from their homes”.

Today, in the local, 15, rue Pré La Reine, convivial meals and football are more popular than books. The Portuguese Library football club, nicknamed “BIB” by the regulars, plays in the 2nd division.

Tonight, the “BIB” is having fun. The players wet the shirt against the Portuguese elite of local football, the World Cup quarters team. “It smells like 15-0,” smiled Carlos, 26, as he watched the players warm up on the pitch. The young man has just returned from a stay “in the country” and is not in good shape.Manu Lopez, coach of the Portuguese Library team 1 knew the club from its beginnings.

Next door, Manu Lopez, the coach, faces the unexpected. On the phone: “You haven’t left the room yet?? Brings back a game of jersey, all but the color red”, in reference to the jersey of the national team.

The game can finally begin. Between encouragement to his players, Manu, 35 years of “BIB” behind him, explains the DNA of the club: “What I really like is that I was able to play at the time with the fathers of the kids who are on the ground. And now I coach their sons.” More than a club, it’s a “real group of friends” who spend time together.

The association wishes to keep 80% of Portuguese players within its teams. “We try that everyone feels good despite the differences in level that may exist”.On the field, the players of the “BIB” suffer against Victor and his family. The heat of this early evening also has something to do with it. Water bottles are emptied in a few sips.

At the end of the first period, a newcomer to the Portuguese Library comes into play. “What is his name, the new one, already?? “Launches Manu at the edge of the field. “Dylan”, answer in chorus the substitutes sitting on the bench. ” He is Portuguese?? “, ” Nope. But soon, ”smiles a player. “Ah that, he’s going to taste the Super bock

“, ends Manu.

After 80 minutes of play, quite sufficient due to the temperature, the friendly match ended with a score of 4-2. The Portuguese World Cup team won. The “BIB” fought well. But the important thing was elsewhere. *
