Even if we are a club from the Bordeaux Metropolis, we are physically in the city of Villenave-d’Ornon. So we found it natural to go back to basics a bit and call ourselves Ambitions Girondines with the reminder of the town that welcomes us. The name of Saint-Delphin, the carrier association, is quite well known, especially since it will have a U18 France team. Then, Ambitions Girondines still made a name for itself, everyone locates it in Bordeaux.
This season, you had built the team to aim for accession to N1 and everything was decided on the last day of the play-offs, how did you experience this evening?
It was as exciting as it was horrifying with an incredible outcome. I have been the manager of a basketball club for 20 years, I had experienced such a scenario once with CSP Limoges, and there it was quite exceptional. The room was full and the scenario was amazing with two extensions. We equalize 24 seconds from the end, we intercept the ball and on the counter-attack, Héloïse Hillairet scores the basket of victory and the climb. Difficult to live such emotions but the heart held (smile). It was magical during the game and after. We finished late, we took advantage of everyone. Such moments I think the girls will remember for a long time and so will I.
The players had a lot of pressure on their shoulders for this last decisive match, did they take it on as you wished?
Yes, completely. In talking with them at the end, they told us that they almost never doubted even after extra time. They didn’t panic when Trégueux was ahead, they came back with unwavering faith.
Do you feel like you won an audience that night?
Yes, but we had a crescendo of the public this season. And in play-off, the room was more than well stocked. There were more than 1,000 spectators for this last match and as much to say that it galvanizes everyone. And girls need that.
The National 1 will ask for more financial means and the recruitment of seasoned players, where are you?
We established a budget of between 300,000 and 350,000 euros, which is double that of today. Mechanically, with accession, we will receive more help from the Departmental Council, the Regional Council, the city of Villenave, then we have to seek private partners. We set ourselves for the end of July to have 80% of the private partnership. I’m not used to taking risks, so we carried out the recruitment according to what we imagined as financial possibilities.
How did you go about recruiting?
We first met all the players this year to find out which ones wanted to stay or not, knowing that in N1, you are only entitled to 4 transfers. So the base had to stay, which is the case. We kept 5 players, Hillaret, Aucagos, Adzogo, Condoris, Berete plus Dubrasquet but for professional reasons, it may be complicated to do both and Manon Deslous who will be there at the start of the season, but she has a personal project going abroad in November.
Who will be your new players?
We wanted to hire experienced girls at N1 or more. The first is not transferred Alexia Lacaule, position 1, who played at Basket Landes, the second at position 2 is Célia Mauler, she averaged 10 pts in Furdenheim. In position 3, we have changed. The Polish, Kowalska, left and the Bulgarian, Iva Kostova du Poinçonnet joined us. A top player who averaged 13 pts. For position 4, we went to Nice to look for a young player Fanta Sanogo who has the ambition to play in Ligue 2 and our project pleased her. Finally, position 5 will be Brazilian with Laetitia Soares who played in the Portuguese Ligue 1, MVP of the year. I had already contacted him last season.
Freddy Dogum, the coach, announced that he was stopping, have you found a successor for him?
Yes, we recruited Mickaël Dehail who has already been a coach in N2, assistant in Ligue 2 at Landerneau. It will also have a function in Saint-Delphin, that of organizing the future training center for the entire sector of female excellence. There is real continuity between Saint-Delphin and us.
What will your ambitions be?
