OM eliminated, Monaco qualified, Diaby’s decisive goal… What you shouldn’t miss from Matchday 5

The verdict is approaching for the group stage of the Europa League 2021-2022. At the end of the fifth day, we now know some of the qualifiers (including OL and AS Monaco on the French side). But French football does not shine only through its clubs, like Moussa Diaby, who scored a goal as pretty as it is important for Bayer Leverkusen. Almost as beautiful as the jewel of Canales, or as the suspense that reigns in Group C.

Lyon and Monaco ensure, OM takes the door

Diverse fortunes for the tricolor formations engaged in the Europa League on Thursday. Already qualified and guaranteed to finish first in their group A, the Lyonnais did not give Brondby a gift despite a reshuffled team (3-1). First jostled by Danes who were playing their last chance, the Gones reversed the situation, in particular thanks to a double from Rayan Cherki. Five games, five successes: OL are a candidate for final victory. In the round of 16, the Lyonnais will be accompanied by AS Monaco.

Solid winners of Real Sociedad, the Monegasques also secured their first place in group B. Quite the opposite of Olympique de Marseille, swept away by Galatasaray in Istanbul at the start of the evening (4-2). Eliminated, the Marseillais remain in favorable ballot to be transferred to the Europa League Conference, where Rennes did the work to compose their ticket for the round of 16.

Moussa Diaby makes an appointment in the spring

There are goals that count more than others: because they are more beautiful, or because they offer major victories. Against Celtic Glasgow, the French international Moussa Diaby (4 selections) did a double blow. We then play the 86th minute and his Bayer Leverkusen teammates have finally equalized against Celtic Glasgow. But this small point of zero is not enough for the French.

Only full axis, at the entrance to the surface, the former Parisian comes to take up a center volley. The balance is perfect, the leather slips into the small opposite net while bouncing. Bayer Leverkusen wins at the same time 3-2, secures its first place, and therefore its ticket for the knockout stages of C3 next spring.

A rain of qualified, except in group C

After five days of the Europa League, we are necessarily starting to see more clearly. And the French clubs are not the only ones to be fixed on their European destiny. Executioners of OM, the Turks of Galatasaray will play a group final in the last match against Lazio Rome, the two teams can still finish in first place. But on Thursday, Betis Sevilla, Bayer Leverkusen, West Ham and Olympiakos also ensured their qualification for the rest of the competition.

The suspense remains in Group F, where Red Star Belgrade, Braga and Midtjylland are held by two points, as is Group C, whose 4 teams (Leicester, Spartak Moscow, Naples and Legia Warsaw) can still qualify. Mad.

Sergio Canales, master artificer

A jewel. A candy. A praline. Call it what you want, but in any case it is a delight offered to us by Sergio Canales. Betis Sevilla leads quietly 1-0 against Ferencvaros, bottom of Group G. The Spaniards will then secure their second place behind Bayer Leverkusen thanks to the inspiration of Canales, who comes to get the leather on a touch, right side, before to transplant in the axis. His curling shot that follows will lodge in the opposite skylight. Enough to give ideas to Ivanic, of Red Star Belgrade, who offers victory to his family in the same way against Ludogorets in group F.
