Over the past decade, how have the Violets started their seasons in Ligue 1? La Dépêche went back to 2010-2011 to analyze the beginnings of the exercises of Toulouse. Who are used to cannon starts…

-2011: full box. In 2010, the TFC of Gignac, Didot, Braaten and Sissoko attacked the season with a bang. By winning against Brest at home (2-0), Bordeaux (2-1), against Arles (2-1) and Nancy (0-2), the Violets achieved a full house in August and completed the month in first place in the ranking. They will finish the season in 8th place.

-2012: two entry victories. The following year, Toulouse attacked again hard. Thanks to Antoine Devaux and Paulo Machado, Tef won their first game on the lawn of AC Ajaccio, where a certain Andy Delort played, and confirmed on the second day at home against Dijon (2-0). There followed a draw in Nice and a defeat against Paris. Toulouse will finish 8th again.

-2013: still undefeated in August. The TFC starts with a draw on the lawn of Montpellier (1-1) with a goal from Ben Yedder, before winning at the Stadium against Saint-Etienne (2-1, Ben Yedder scores again, Gradel for the Greens) then to Nancy (1-0, goal from Sissoko) and to draw against Reims (1-1, Ben Yedder, again). The TFC finished undefeated again in August, and will rank 10th, Wissam Ben Yedder will score 15 goals.

-2014: this time, it failed. Once is not custom, the TFC misses in large widths. Captain Pantxi Sirieix’s Violets were badly beaten at Valenciennes on the first day (3-0), before drawing at the Stadium against Bordeaux (1-1) then Monaco (0-0) and being defeated at Bastia 2-1. After 4 days, the TFC is 19th. He will pull himself together and finish 9th.

-2015: good at home, not away. Mixed results for the start of this season. The TFC lost at first in Nice, then in Bastia (3rd day), but won its first two meetings at the Stadium, against Lyon and Evian. After the dismissal of Alain Casanova in the middle of the season, Tef will finish at the gates of Ligue 2 with Dominique Arribagé on the bench: 17th.

-2016: a sham start. The TFC wins at home against Saint-Etienne in the opening (2-1), but the result will be disastrous: the Violets do not win again until November 28. Despite a Ben Yedder to 17 goals for his last season on the banks of the Garonne, the Tef does not succeed. It will take the reinforcement of Pascal Dupraz, who replaces Dominique Arribagé during the season, to avoid shipwreck and relegation during a last legendary meeting on the lawn of Angers.

-2017: Bordeaux slapped. The TFC begins its season at the Vélodrome stadium, where it holds OM in check (0-0), before receiving the Girondins de Bordeaux. Final score: 4-1 (Braithwaite x2, Diop, Jullien). The Toulousains will then chain two games away (draw in Bastia, defeat in Saint-Etienne). They will finish 11th.

-2018: still intractable at home. Dupraz’s men start again on the outside, they are beaten in Monaco (3-2). But their first two home games will end in victories. 1-0 against Montpellier (Durmaz) then 3-2 against Rennes (Durmaz x2, Diop). In the meantime, they will have been corrected in Paris 6-2. With Michäel Debève, replacing Dupraz ousted, Toulouse finished 18th and only saved themselves in the play-off against Ajaccio.

-2019: Casanova puts the TFC back on the podium. Alain Casanova is back home. For the first match of his second term, the party is spoiled by OM and its three recent world champions, Adil Rami, Florian Thauvin and Steve Mandanda. For the opening of the season, the Violets are swept 4-0. But they will follow up with three victories, against Bordeaux (2-1), against Nîmes (1-0) and Guingamp (2-1) to finish August in 3rd place. They will finish 16th.

-2020: the impregnable Stadium in August. Two more home victories to start the season at home, on the 2nd day against Dijon (1-0, Makengo) and the 4th against Amiens (Makengo, Koulouris). During the 1st day, the TFC drew in Brest (1-1). The rest will be much less pleasing, with relegation to Ligue 2 at the end of a season ended prematurely due to the Covid. On the 28th day, the TFC was last in the standings and remained on a series of 18 games without a win.

To say that the TFC is having a successful start to the season at home is an understatement. We have to go back to 2005 to find traces of a defeat for the first match of the season at the Stadium.
