Destination Australia for the 2022 UCI Road World Championships to be held in Wollongong with an unprecedented program

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) invites the best cyclists on the planet to meet at the 2022 UCI Road World Championships in Wollongong. Located less than 100 km south of Sydney, the Australian city with spectacular landscapes, bordered to the east by the South Pacific and to the west by Mount Keira, will host the event from September 18 to 25, 2022.

The circuits of the 2022 UCI Road World Championships will offer the approximately 1,000 athletes expected, a terrain conducive to the development of thrilling races with magnificent circuits and an unprecedented programme. The courses, designed to meet the expectations of both runners and fans, will allow spectators to watch the coronation of the next wearers of the rainbow jersey in an exceptional setting.

Time Trials

The 2022 edition of the UCI Road World Championships will start on Sunday 18 September with the time trials for the Women Elite and Men Elite categories which will be held on the same day, on the same course and over the same distance, which represents a a great first in the history of the UCI Road World Championships, in line with the principle of parity between men and women advocated by the UCI.

For all categories, the time trials will take place on an urban circuit. The distance will be slightly longer for Elite athletes with a route that will stretch from the north of the city to Towradgi beach, back to the center of Wollongong.

The course of the time trial, rolling and fast, will allow the best exercise specialists to take advantage of their specific qualities. The runners will pass through iconic places in the Australian city such as the Squire’s Way, the Thomas Dalton sports complex, the campus of the University of Wollongong and the Stuart Park located by the ocean. The last few hundred meters of the time trial will be located along Cliff Road at the base of Wollongong’s iconic lighthouse in Flagstaff Hill. The finish line will be found along the sublime seafront City Beach.

Online races

The Men Elite and Women Elite road races will take place on the weekend of September 24 and 25. The start of the circuit will be in the town of Helensburgh, north of Wollongong, on the edge of Dharawal National Park, the peloton will then head south to Stanwell Tops, before passing Bald Hill and to descend towards the city by Coalcliff and the mythical Sea Cliff Bridge.

The Mont Keira loop has a highest point at 473 m altitude. This mountain is popular with local cyclists for its demanding ascent, subtropical surroundings and dramatic descent through Kembla Heights, Cordeaux Heights to the Port of Kembla Steelworks.

The circuit laid out in the city of Wollongong is technical. It will be used in particular by runners in the Junior and Under 23 categories. The peloton will pass through the suburbs of Gwynneville, but also Mount Ousley with a climb reaching 119m in altitude to Mount Pleasant via Fairy Meadow and the north of Wollongong.

David Lappartient, President of the UCI, said: “After five years in Europe, the UCI was keen to see its UCI Road World Championships organized on another continent. After Richmond (USA) in 2015 and Doha (Qatar) in 2016, I am delighted that Wollongong has been chosen as the host city for our annual flagship event in 2022. This will be his big return to Oceania, 12 years after the UCI Road World Championships organized in 2010 in Melbourne and Geelong, Australia already.

“For the athletes to be at their best and give the public the best show, all the conditions must be met, and I know that Wollongong will live up to our expectations. The UCI Bike City has repeatedly proven its commitment to making the best infrastructure available to cyclists of all levels.

“The Covid-19 pandemic having so far limited our trips to Wollongong, the UCI is looking forward to coming during the first quarter of 2022 to meet the actors involved in the organization of the event, in order to finalize the planning with the organizing committee and confirming all the details of the competition, which will then be communicated to the greater international cycling community. »
