Antwerp will be the basketball capital of the world in June thanks to the Crelan FIBA 3×3 World Cup – FIBA 3×3 World Cup 2022

Antwerp (Belgium) – The 20 best men’s and women’s teams on the planet (including Belgian 3×3 Lionsthe Belgian 3×3 Cats and the titleholders of UNITED STATES and some China) will be part of the game from June 21 to 26 in Antwerp during the Crelan FIBA World Cup 3×3. The Crelan FIBA 3×3 Europe Cup should normally have taken place in Antwerp in 2020, but the coronavirus crisis decided otherwise. Flanders, basketbal Vlaanderen, the city of Antwerp and the organizer Sportizon/Golazo had therefore decided to apply for the organization of the 2022 World Cup. With success: FIBA, the international basketball organization ball, awarded Flanders the FIBA 3×3 Basketball World Cup 2022 early last year.

For several years, the Flemish government has been investing through EventFlanders to attract and support major events with social, reputational and economic value for the region. Spread over 4 host cities, the Road Cycling Worlds took place in Flanders last September, while the Breaking Worlds (Leuven) and the Artistic Gymnastics Worlds (Antwerp) are on the program in the fall of 2023. Flanders and Antwerp are therefore taking another big step with the coming of the World Cup in one of the new Olympic disciplines.

“Flanders welcomes the 3×3 Basketball World Cup with open arms, in the shadow of the majestic Cathedral of Antwerp”, underlines the Flemish Minister of Sports Ben Weyts. “This contemporary and dynamic urban sport will stimulate and inspire young people, including some of them who would not play sports otherwise. I strongly believe in the added value that the World Cup will bring for the future development of basketball in Flanders.”

“Our Flemish cities are high places of creativity where young people can also blossom. With the 3×3 Basketball World Cup, we have found the perfect springboard to show different strengths to international youth and convince them to come and visit Antwerp and our many other beautiful cities. As the competition approaches, we will present Flanders to the world as a must-visit destination”, explains the Flemish Minister of Tourism Zuhal Demir.

Right in the historic heart of Antwerp, the main site will be installed on the Greenplaats with a grandstand that can accommodate 1,800 spectators. The warm-up ground and its stand for 300 people will be located on the Grote Markt. Access to the event is free. People wishing to ensure their place in advance for the group matches of the Belgian 3×3 Lions (Tuesday and Thursday) or the Belgian 3×3 Cats (Wednesday and Friday) or for the quarter-finals (Saturday), semi-finals (Saturday) or finals (Sunday) can reserve a ticket for 7 euros. You also receive two vouchers for a drink in the public area next to the main pitch on the Groenplaats.

We will play basketball on the Groenplaats, but also on the Grote Markt. The basketball courts of yesteryear Sint Jansvliet and Sint-Andriesplaats will also be revived during the Crelan FIBA 3×3 World Cup with, among other things, a neighborhood tournament and the Antwerp preliminary round of the Crelan 3×3 Masters, the official Belgian 3×3 basketball championship.

Kamil Novak, FIBA Executive Director for Europe, welcomes the downtown location. “One of the missions of 3×3 basketball is precisely to bring the sport to the center of the city, with real landmarks in the background. The historic center of Antwerp undoubtedly offers one of the most spectacular settings in the world. “3×3 history. We are delighted to come to such a young and dynamic city and region with this first 3×3 World Cup since the Olympic debut in Tokyo last year.”

Mayor of Antwerp Bart De Wever: “As the sports capital of Flanders, Antwerp has focused on urban sports in recent years. The 3×3 Basketball World Cup fits perfectly into this line of conduct and gives us even more aura as an urban and dynamic hotspot in the heart of Europe. Thanks to the World Cup, we immerse Antwerp in the unique and accessible atmosphere of 3×3 basketball for the space of a week. This event will not only attract the attention of fans from all over the world to our city, but also encourage the people of Antwerp to get moving.”

Antwerp Alderman for Sports Peter Wouters: “In addition to a fine tribute to the long tradition of basketball in Antwerp, the 3×3 Basketball World Cup promises to offer real promotion to this trendy and spectacular sport. With Sporting A, we are also taking advantage of this World Cup to make the leap between this street variant and the regular work of the many Antwerp basketball teams. This is why we have embarked on an upstream activation phase including, among other things, initiations in schools, neighborhood events and a 3×3 offer at SPRK, our urban hall at Park Spoor Noord.”

“The Crelan FIBA 3×3 Basketball World Cup in Antwerp fits perfectly with our vision: with top sport and major sporting events, we are creating a locomotive and a catalyst for basketball in Flanders”, emphasizes Koen Umans, President of Basketbal Vlaanderen. “This World Cup is the 2and biggest event after the Olympics and will put Belgian 3×3 basketball on the map. As a federation, we are also happy to make the transition to the general public with the implementation of a series of initiatives. 3×3 basketball is our response to the demand for the ‘free’ athlete, not necessarily linked to a club. This is a huge opportunity for basketball and for our clubs to remain socially relevant in a changing society. With 3×3 we have the opportunity to reach many new target groups and significantly reduce the drop in membership.”

In collaboration with MOEV, a school competition is also organized with finals in the different categories which will be held on the Groenplaats. Wheelchair basketball players will also be able to give their best on the ‘main court’ of the Groenplaats. Several places will also host 3×3 Basketball Camps as well as free introductions to 3×3.

So there will be a lot going on ahead of the Crelan FIBA 3×3 Basketball World Cup. In the coming weeks and months, 3×3 initiations will take place in several primary schools in Flanders. And those who have taken a liking to the discipline can soon turn to Hoops: this new app is the basketball platform par excellence to challenge your friends and other teams, but also to keep score, statistics and rankings. Hoops makes it quick and easy to find all the basketball courts near you.

An official club competition is also launched in April to boost 3×3 basketball. The first matches will take place on April 16 in Lier. Further days will follow in Melsele (May 14), Zonhoven (May 22) and Asse-Ternat (May 29).
